Research

My research explores how emerging research institutions (ERIs) strengthen regional innovation ecosystems through university-industry-government partnerships that expand student learning, advance economic development, and build institutional capacity. Using a systems lens grounded in design-based research, learning-through-participation, and the Triple Helix model, I study how universities create the internal structures and processes necessary for effective cross-sector collaboration.

As Principal Investigator of an NSF-funded GRANTED planning grant, I led the development of a centralized partnership hub (The Collaboratory) to examine the conditions that enable ERIs to participate more fully in innovation ecosystems traditionally dominated by R1 institutions. My work identifies the structural, cultural, and educational factors that shape partnership readiness and contributes practical models for building equitable student research opportunities, industry-responsive academic systems, and institution-wide mechanisms for collaboration.
